Cold snap causes 50 percent of Hydro Québec use to heat homes

With cold temperatures expected to stay well below normal for the next two to three weeks, Hydro Québec is asking that customers avoid using extra energy during peak hours in the morning and evening.
The provincial energy giant noted that during cold weather snaps, half of all electricity used within its grid is to heat homes and apartments. When the weather is especially cold, peak use jumps during 6 a.m.-9 p.m. and then from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. During that time, major electrical users like dryers and dishwashers should be avoided to save money and restrict peak use.
Other suggestions from Hydro Québec include limiting the use of hot water during peak periods and lowering the temperature in rooms not being occupied.
These suggestions can prevent Hydro Québec from having to purchase extra “power from neighboring systems at times. Energy exchanges between Hydro Québec and its neighboring systems are common practice.”
By adhering to these suggestions, Hydro Québec hopes for consumers to save money and not put too much pressure on the grid.
