A study out of Texas A&M University has identified a biological pathway that helps to explain the link between coffee and healthier aging.

Researchers say that compounds in coffee might activate NR4A1—a receptor involved in stress response, inflammation. metabolism and tissue repair.

Robert S. Chapkin, distinguished fellow at the American Society for Nutrition says that it has well-documented positive effects that are “…similar to the Mediterranean diet.”

Dr. Stephen Safe, distinguished professor at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences says that NR4A1 is a “nuclear receptor,” that engages with small molecules in coffee and “…can improve human health and reduce the risk of several chronic diseases of aging.”
