Ingesting capsules containing faecal microbes from healthy sleepers, may help treat insomnia.

About one in ten adults worldwide show symptoms of insomnia.

The sleep disorder can cause daytime cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, fatigue, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

Previous studies have determined the stool contains beneficial bacteria that can improve a patient’s gut bacteria, which can help regulate metabolism and guards immune health.

The technique is already used to treat some gastrointestinal infections, with feces from “healthy donors” used to repopulate the essential microbes in the gut of a patient.

Details were published in the Journal of Internal Medicine.
