Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board (SWLSB) voted last week to study the feasibility of building a new, year-round soccer complex in Laval.

During its Feb. 25 meeting, SWLSB council approved a motion by Commissioner Paolo Galati. The resolution mandated school board director-general Stephanie Vucko to open talks aimed at forging a partnership with the Monteuil sporting association and the Fabrose Soccer Club.

The project proposed constructing a large indoor facility that would house a regulation soccer field with artificial turf, as well as two indoor soccer venues, accompanied by bodybuilding and cardiovascular workout areas.

Although no site has yet been selected, the land adjacent to Mother Teresa High School on Dagenais was mooted as a strong possibility.

Laval executive committee vice-chairman David de Cotis told The Suburban that he welcomed the school board’s initiative to consider developing a sports complex in Laval. Although Galati also serves on city council where he was elected to represent St. Vincent de Paul district, de Cotis underscored that the sports complex it is not part of the municipal budget.

“To my knowledge there have been no requests for any city permits to conduct any study for building a sports complex,” he said in an interview. “On the other hand, it is a positive initiative. We encourage private ventures and, if it pays for itself, it is a very positive development for the City of Laval.”
