Laval pays tribute to its Olympians

The city of Laval convened a special ceremony, Nov. 9, to honour eleven residents who participated in the Olympic games held in
London, England, this summer.

Nine athletes, a trainer and a technical
director each received a $2,500 bursary from
the city, which has avidly lent its financial support to amateur athletics since 2000.

The Olympians were Jennifer Abel,
Geneviève Bélanger, Alexandre Despatie,
Stéphanie Dubois, Martine Dugrenier,
Brendan Gaulin, Roseline Filion, Joëlle
Numainville, Sandra Sassine, trainer Julie
Sauvé and technical director Gabriela Mayer.

Three of them, Geneviève Bélanger, Stéphanie Dubois and Joëlle Numainville were
also awarded the city council medal, which the
other eight had already received in previous

“Encouraging physical fitness is a municipal
priority, and Laval highlights its athletes’
achievements because they clearly inspire
motivation and perseverance in their fellow
citizens,” Laval executive committee member
and chair of the city’s physical fitness committee Alexandre Duplessis said in a statement.

The city also ran An Evening with a Laval
contest to encourage citizens to
send messages to their Laval athletes.

“All the messages were received were read at
the ceremony, and a lucky fifteen citizens and
their guests were invited to participate in this
special evening.”
