Organizers have donated $25,000 to the cause in last three years

For a fourth straight year, the city of Kirkland will hold a Terry Fox community run organized by Kathleen Houlihan, Michele Morningstar and Elena Trigiani who have, since planning the last three events, donated more than $25,000 for the cause and hope to achieve last year’s goal of raising $10,000 for the run that will take place on Sunday, Sept. 15.
The reason for starting the run in Kirkland came when the three young women found that once they had left high school, young people were no longer exposed to the Terry Fox Run. “Once you go to CEGEP, there was no platform for us to take part any longer and the Terry Fox Foundation organizes community runs across the country with about 30 taking place in Quebec and we wanted Kirkland to be a part of it,” Trigiani told The Suburban.
“We are happy to work for the cause since 84 cents of every dollar raised goes towards cancer research,” said Trigiani.
For Trigiani, the run has taken on a personal noted as in the first two years; her grandmother was in attendance but after being diagnosed with cancer herself, had to sit out last year’s run because of treatments. “Now my grandmother’s treatments are working well and will continue so that she can recover and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she will be able to attend this year’s event.”
The run will take place at Heritage Park in the Timberlea district of Kirkland where runners, cyclists, skateboarders and walkers are invited to take part where everyone, not just Kirkland citizens, are invited to participate.
It is a non competitive race with a 2 km loop but runners can do as many as 10 km if they desire.
There will also be a DJ, barbecue and refreshments on the day.
