Laval city council awarded a contract for major renovations of the Yvon Chartrand arena to Genfor Construction at their March council meeting.

Construction at the arena located on Boulevard de la Concorde East in St. Vincent de Paul neighbourhood will begin this spring and should be completed in the fall of 2015.

“We are investing more than $6 million in the Yvon Chartrand arena so that the citizens of St. Vincent de Paul district and the entire city can, in the near future, enjoy a modern sporting infrastructure.” Laval Mayor Marc Demers stated in a release, “In addition to responding to a need expressed by the population, the renovation of the arena meets the objective of our physical activity policy that guides the actions of the city in order to foster an environment conducive to a physically active lifestyle.”

The revamp will include everything from top to bottom. The building, built in 1976, will undergo major renovations to better meet current ice sports needs. It will also address environmental standards.

The Freon refrigeration system will be replaced by an ammonia system which is more efficient and environmentally sound. The concrete slab holding the ice will be changed. In addition the lighting system will be replaced. Interior furnishings will be updated and the lobby will be modified for improved accessibility. The roof will be replaced and last but not least the band stands will be replaced and will have a new heating system for fans.
