Snow clearing and summer projects in LaSalle

Citizens brought winter to LaSalle’s borough meeting last Monday, while most of the motions passed focused on summer projects and communication.

Francisco Moreno asked again why it’s taken so long to clean-up the ice remaining from snow that fell on Jan. 3 and 4. Giant hills have since frozen in place in front of residents’ homes blocking multiple parking spaces. Layers of ice also remain on the sidewalks.

“We are now in the third snow-clearing operation since Jan. 3-4,” said Richard Deschamps, whose currently serving as mayor of the borough while Manon Barbe is out of the country. “De-icing the sidewalks and roads will be done by Wednesday. In future, we’re planning on cleaning the snow faster.”

To help with that, councillors passed a motion authorizing more than $150,000 to Remorquage mobile and Gestion Normar Inc. for the rental of more snow-clearing equipment this season.

Other motions dealt with summer projects.

Heritage Laurentien got more than $200,000 to take care of the Parc des Rapides.

Two contracts were given out to companies working on the Aquadome renovation, including almost $99,000 for drains.

The borough also confirmed that it will spend almost $100,000 on a 7.9 km bike path along LaSalle Boulevard.

Communications for the 2015 year also got attention. A contract was given to Transcontinental Media for borough publications, although the amount of the contract was unspecified. Canada Posts got $38,000 to deliver six issues of Accent and a list of sports and culture activities.

A project to change the zoning for buildings on lot 4,760,623 north of Allard near Irwin received a second reading.

Councillors also approved the minutes for the meeting held on Jan. 12. Those minutes included a $67,000 contract to Payette and Simms for the six Accent newsletters and $53,808.30 to Corriveau Girard Architectes (CGA) to transform LaSalles former city hall at 13 Strathyre Avenue into a cultural institution.

A meeting about that project took place at city hall just prior to council.
