English Montreal School Board commissioner and attorney Patricia Lattanzio has been elected chairman of the Comité de gestion de la taxe scolaire de l’île de Montréal (CGTSIM), the first anglophone representative to hold the post.

Composed of representatives from the five Montreal island public school boards the CGTSIM imposes and collects school taxes from property owners on the territory; distributes income earned from investments to schools in underprivileged areas; takes out loans and meets the cash flow needs of the member boards.

“In light of the provincial government’s budgetary cuts, austerity measures and the restructuring of school boards, the Comité will undoubtedly play a pivotal role and serve as a model,” said Lattanzio, adding, “many people know of the Comité’s role as a tax collector, but in fact, it is a central manager of the taxes collected and does a lot more.”

Lattanzio is serving the second term on the EMSB council of commissioners, and currently sits on the St. Léonard borough’s Planning Advisory Committee.
