Borough takes axe

More than 400 ash trees are coming under the axe in Côte des Neiges-Notre Dame de Grâce as part of the borough’s ongoing battle with the pervasive canopy destroying Emerald Ash Borer.
The borough will soon fell 430 publicly-owned trees that have sustained irreversible damage and may pose a danger to public safety, and will plant trees in places affected by the cutting.
Since 2011 the borough and city have acted with screening, preventive treatment of publicly-owned trees and cutting 230 ash trees last winter.
Residents with ash trees on private land will get no help from the borough other than a reference to contact professionals for advice on how to proceed at their own expense. If their tree shows no signs of damage, preventive treatment is recommended. If damage is observed, a tree professional can determine if it is caused by the insect and if it is irreversible. If so the tree will have to be cut down.
The borough has already spent $175 on the fight against Emerald Ash Borer this year, in addition to efforts by the center city which included treating more than 900 trees on public land with biopesticide.
