Fall Shave to Save campaigns are well underway, as citizens shave off their own locks to raise money for cancer and breast cancer research. For West Island Citizen Advocacy’s Marla Newhook, the act of shaving off her hair was an act of loyalty to longtime friend Chantal Pousseur.
Pousseur was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago and like most people, Newhook, “didn’t know what to say. What is an appropriate response when you find out that news?”
When her friend mentioned that due to her upcoming treatments, she would lose her hair. “When she asked ‘who’s with me,’ I knew what my answer would be,” Newhook told The Suburban.
Going with the attitude that “it is only hair and will grow back,” Newhook raised more than $2,000 for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation before letting all of her hair go last week.
“Mine should grow back and I had a choice but for Chantal who is taking chemotherapy, she doesn’t have a choice,” said Newhook.
One of the reasons Newhook wanted to take part in the campaign is that her friend, who has made a career helping senior citizens, “always has a smile on her face and is always ready to help other people. She has always been a big part of the community and has faced everything in her life with positivity.”
