The city of Laval received certification for being a child friendly municipality on May 24, by Carrefour action municipale et famille the Municipal (CAMF).

This award is granted by CAMF in collaboration with UNICEF Canada and symbolizes municipality’s commitment to the well being and rights of children. The city is committed to supporting the implementation of the initiative on the rights of the child along with the United Nations to promote National Child Day, held every Nov. 20.

The city has now officially joined forces with other international child-friendly cities to improve the environmental quality of life of children.

The Child Friendly Cities Initiative by UNICEF emerged in recognition of several important trends: the rapid transformation and urbanization of global societies; the growing responsibilities of municipalities and communities for their populations in the context of decentralization; and consequently the increasing importance of cities and towns within national political and economic systems. The initiative represents a strategy for promoting the highest quality of life for all citizens.
