Provincial election in the offing?
By Robert Frank
Laval will be getting new transportation infrastructure, courtesy of Quebec taxpayers, Laval des Rapides MNA Léo Bureau-Blouin said in a pair of statements, Oct. 4.
Vimont residents north of Highway 440 will get a new, 2.1 km sound wall that will stretch from Highway 19 to Lublin Street. The province will foot half of the bill for the wall, whose price tag was not specified.
“Without a shadow of a doubt, these sound walls will improve peace and quiet for Laval residents who live near Highway 440,” Bureau-Blouin remarked.
The province’s youngest legislator also announced that the following five reserved bus lanes ought to be in operation by 2016 in Laval:
• Concorde, between Montmorency Metro and Pie IX
• Laurentides between St. Martin and Cartier
• Corbusier between Montmorency Metro and Dagenais’
• Labelle from the Mille Îles River to Rivière des Prairies
• Lévesque from Samson to Antoine Labelle
The construction is part of a three-year, $80 million project to introduce 208 km of reserved bus lanes in the Greater Montreal region.
Bureau-Blouin added that the province has committed to building three more “medium-term” bus lane projects, further down the pike:
• Laurentides between St. Martin and Dagenais
• Dagenais between Arthur Sauvé and Highway 13
• Highway 13 between the Mille Îles River and Highway 40
The announcement was on of a string of infrastructure projects unveiled by the Parti québécois government during the past two weeks, including an extension of the Metro blue line eastward in Montreal.
New transportation schemes are often the harbinger of upcoming elections in Quebec, increasing the expectation that the province’s voters may be going to the polls before the year is out.
With municipal election campaigns in full gear in the lead up to ballots in cities throughout the province, the election likely won’t be called until after Nov. 3, implying a provincial vote at the beginning of December, at the earliest.
