Gilles Vaillancourt intends to continue to serve as Laval mayor, to put paid
to intense media scrutiny last week,
after Quebec provincial police conducted searches at city hall and at his residence, Oct. 4.
“This morning we are facing a surge
of allegations, rumours and demands,”
the popular mayor, first elected 23
years ago, said in a statement, Oct. 5.
“I won’t be resigning,” Vaillancourt
vowed, “nor will I comment on the
rumours and various allegations being
made.”
He expressed shock and dismay at
the intrusion, but pledged that he and
the municipal administration will give
police their full cooperation.
He added that he would not speculate as to the reasons why police conducted the operation “because I don’t
know what they are!”
