Laval and Sainte Thérèse-Blainville peace officers arrested two people for driving while intoxicated, during a police roadblock, from 11 p.m. Dec. 6. through 3 a.m., Dec. 7.
Though police had announced that they planned to conduct the roadblock on the Marius Durfresne bridge, which links Laval and Rosemere, the public disclosure nonetheless failed to deter some individuals.
“We told people in advance, and even then some people were caught driving over the legal alcohol limit,” Laval police spokesman Const. Franco di Genova told The Suburban.
Equipped with portable breathalyzer units, they stopped 252 cars during random checks, he said.
Drivers who tested positive were sent to a mobile command post, where they were subjected to tests on a more sophisticated breath analysis machine, before any arrests were made.
“Holiday season is coming up, and people are attending more parties,” he observed. “We conducted the roadblock, dubbed Operation Vaccin, in order to remind people of our presence.”
“There will be more roadblocks,” he continued, “but I can’t say when and where they will be conducted henceforth.”
In addition to the two drunk-driving arrests, Const. di Genova added that three people received tickets for highway code infractions.
“The two cars belonging to the drunk drivers were seized, as well as another vehicle.”
