Cholesterol variant can trigger heart attacks and strokes in otherwise healthy people

One in five people worldwide have a specific type of LDL called Liproprotein(a) which can lead to heart attacks or strokes in people who appear to be perfectly healthy.

Research has determined that one in five Canadians have high levels of Lipoprotein-A in their blood streams, offering them a greater risk of a heart attack or stroke.

There’s no routine screening and no symptoms that could predict a health incident.

A group of doctors for the Canadian Lp(a) Working Group, reporting in Canadian Journal of Cardiology, is working to increase awareness among family physicians.
