For the 14th and final year, RBC has again raised a handsome amount towards West Island Community Shares annual fundraising campaign. The more than 400 breakfasts served at St. Hubert on St. Charles Road amassed a sum of $35,000.
The breakfast, which was conceived by WICS co-founder Pierre Arvisais, had 22 volunteers from RBC as well as Community Shares frying bacon and making coffee as early as 3 a.m. the night before. West Island IGA Extras stores provided the food and St. Hubert has provided the location for the past 14 years.
This was the last Valentine’s breakfast that will be served by RBC as they have a special surprise event scheduled for next year. According to organizer Karen Kroon of RBC, after raising $430,000 in 14 years of serving this breakfast, it was time to shake things up.
“We will incorporate four of our partners, private banking, RBC dominion securities, commercial banking and personal banking,” Kroon told The Suburban in an interview, “we want to do this so we can have a greater impact on the community.”
The 27-member fund distribution committee at WICS ensures the allocation of funds based on the needs and priorities of the community. They have distributed $9.7 million to 38 charities since WICS inception. All leftover food from the breakfast fundraiser was donated to the Pierrefonds Community Project.
