The official opening of the Louise Beauchamp Residence will take place a little later than originally anticipated, but it will still occur prior to the end of 2014. So says André Dénommé, a spokesperson for l’Office municipal d’habitation de Laval (OMHL).

“When the entrepreneur gives us a date, we’ll start having contracts signed,” he said.

About two-thirds of the residential portion of the building has been reserved so far, thanks in part to open houses at the end of August.

“We held our open houses on Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30,” said Dénommé. “The open houses are interesting because people have a better idea of what they’re getting.”

During the two days, 166 potential residents got to see two completed apartments, a three-and-a-half and a four-and-a-half. During the tours, OMHL officials collected the names of anyone eligible who might be interested.

To be accepted, residents must be 75 years of age or older, unless they have mobility issues, in which case they can be between the ages of 65-74. Live-in caregivers must be 65 years of age or older. Single-occupancy units cost $1,238 per month; double occupancy apartments cost $1,644. Those rates include lunch every day, free washers and driers and full-time video surveillance. Parking costs another $5 or $35 per month for exterior or interior spots respectively.

Half of the apartment units are available for people who qualify for government subsidies. All applicants, whether subsidized or not, must have a net worth of less than $120,000, have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, and have lived in greater Montreal for at least one year.

“We have the names of about 60 people who are have given their names, but no contract has been signed yet,” he said. “These older people need to see their apartment before they agree to rent it.”

The outside of the building also needs to be finished, as do the future offices of the OMHL.

Once the contractor provides a date for an official opening, the OMHL will begin having potential residents sign contracts.

They also have another open house planned for the end of November or the beginning of December.
