A Laval resident caused a major fire at his home at 592 88th Avenue in Chomedey.
Laval firefighters suspect the man had just finished varnishing the floors of his bungalow when he lit up a cigarette just before 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2.
The varnish fumes lurking in the air ignited with the flame and the ensuing fire quickly engulfed the house.
The man was treated for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was mildly injured at the scene.
The Laval fire department estimates damages at $400,000.
Earlier in the week, two men cut the fence of a car dealership early Tuesday morning on Aug. 5 and stole two mag wheels worth $800.
The theft occurred at 3 a.m. at the car lot at 2900 Curé Labelle Blvd. in Laval.
The men cut through the chain-link fence and took off with the expensive equipment.
