Kelso Park the site of memorial service

The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 91, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, honored its veterans with the annual Remembrance Day parade on Sunday, Nov. 9.
Cooler conditions did not dampen the spirit, as over 200 citizens gathered at Kelso Park, adjacent to the Legion, awaiting the procession to arrive at noon from its late morning stop at the veteran’s hospital.
Legion President Mike Purvis saluted the men and women, including community leaders, Mayor Paola Hawa of Ste. Anne de Bellevue, and Liberal MNA, Geoff Kelley as they made their way on Ste. Anne Street.
“This ten-day window, from Oct. 30-Nov. 11, is the most important for the legion during the year. It is to remember, and honor our soldiers who sacrificed for our country,” said Purvis.
Twelve wreaths, from various municipalities, and organizations, were placed, one at a time, around the monument.
“My father was president of Branch 192, Arundel, for a five year period. He taught me at an early age, that veterans deserve, and warrant the respect which is offered,” St. Lazare resident, Robert Reside told The Suburban.
The recent events in Ottawa, and St. Jean sur Richelieu prevented cadets from partaking in the ceremony.
“The decision to not have the cadets here is tough. It was an opportunity to solidify unity,” stated Purvis, seen marching towards the tribute.
A reception and refreshments followed at the Legion, as the mark of respect ended at 1:40 p.m.
