All municipalities will get a chance to collaborate on action plan

Many of the police precincts throughout the island of Montreal are divided up to include one or two major municipalities. For example, Station 3 handles all of Dollard des Ormeaux while Station 5 covers Dorval and Pointe Claire.
Station 1 has the largest territory with five municipalities to cover: Senneville, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Baie d’Urfe, Beaconsfield and Kirkland. As part of Montreal’s police outreach program with citizens, the station will be holding five separate public forum evenings where residents are encouraged to come out and participate in the station’s evolving action plan.
The reasoning behind the five separate forums is that the needs of Baie d’Urfe residents might not be the same as those living in Beaconsfield or Kirkland.
“We want to create a forum where members of the community can participate in discussion groups with fellow residents on issues that are pertinent to their needs and interests,” said Station 1 community relations officer J.P. Levis.
The outline for each municipality’s Citizens’ Approach public forum will be a small introduction followed by citizens picking one of several groups to “tackle specific topics such as route safety, criminality, partnerships with police and public incivilities like graffiti, loitering and disturbing the peace,” Levis told The Suburban.
After the groups have had a chance to discuss their topic of interest, an appointed member will share the group’s insights with the rest of the assembled. “Based on citizens’ feedback, everything will be tabulated for the station’s 2014 Action Plan,” Levis said.
Before the conclusion of the forum, a general forum of any subject not tackled during the meeting will discussed. “During these meetings we will be dealing with generalities faced by a municipality and not specific crimes per se,” said Levis.
Levis suggests interested citizens contact their respective city halls to RSVP as seating could be limited.
The SPVM Citizens’ Approach public forums begin tonight for Ste. Anne de Bellevue citizens at 7:30 p.m. at Harpell Hall. The following night, Thursday, Jan. 23, Kirkland residents can take part at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
Baie d’Urfe residents are invited for Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Red Barn. Beaconsfield’s public forum is taking place Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Herb Linder Annex in Beaconsfield at 7 p.m. Senneville’s visit is on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the George McLeish Community Centre, 20 Morningside.
