Researchers identify non-addictive pain-relief alternative to opioids

By Murray Sherriffs

An experimental medication has been shown to relieve pain in early studies, without the risk of addiction.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse says nitazenes, a class of synthetic opioid compounds are a dangerous group of drugs that have no medical value and are highly addictive—hundreds or thousands of times more potent than morphine.

Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the United States’ National Institute of Health, says that the team created a drug called DFNZ—a derivative of nitazene—which can provide at least two hours of pain relief after 5-10 minutes in the system, and does not appear to have any of the serious risks.

Findings are reported in the journal Nature.
