As a way for all Jewish families in Dollard des Ormeaux to receive matzah in time for Passover, Rabbi Leibel Fine began the Chabad of Dollard Matzah Project. The project uses volunteer cooks and deliverers who expect to reach 3,000 homes this year.
In all, almost 80 people help ensure that each Jewish family will receive the traditional unleavened bread in time for Seder dinner as well as the many reliable cooks.
Regular volunteers Pamela Rosenblum and Stanley Lipes began helping out with the project when they visited Fine’s home in preparation for their son’s bar mitzvah.
“When we walked into his house, we saw a large map of Dollard full of pushpins and markers,” noted Rosenblum. “We asked him if he was running for office, and he told us that he had this grand idea of making sure that ever Jewish person in town would have shmurah matzah for the Seder. We just fell in love with the idea.”
“I just love it when people open the door and wish us a happy Passover,” said Rosenblum. “By this point we’ve gotten to recognize each other, and there’s this wonderful feeling between us.”
