In an effort to help homeowners deal with the recent infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer, a pesky insect from Asia that has been claiming trees on the island of Montreal for the last three summers, the cities of Beaconsfield and Sainte Anne de Bellevue are teaming up to host a seminar on the insidious insect taking place Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at Beaconsfield High.

This seminar is part of an important public awareness campaign in order to slow the progression of the insect on the island of Montreal,” explained Sainte Anne de Bellevue spokesperson Karine Asselin.

“Citizens will be informed about the signs and symptoms of infestation and will be informed of the treatment options available for an infested ash tree on their property.”

Throughout the summer, the city of Sainte Anne de Bellevue will be closely monitoring all trees within city limits. In Beaconsfield, measures to stem the insect’s spread have included insect detection traps set two summers ago, an inspection process that included 500 trees as well as no longer planting ash trees within the city’s public lands and replacing them with other species.

Anthony Daniel, who is a biologist and Emerald Ash Borer expert, who works for the city of Montreal, will be the main speaker at the seminar.

“I invite not only the residents of Beaconsfield, but all those in the West Island to attend this important seminar to be better informed on this issue,” said Beaconsfield Mayor Georges Bourelle via press release. “The cooperation of everyone is essential to protect the ash in the region.”

Sainte Anne de Bellevue residents who might have emerald ash borers can call the city’s Environment Department at [514] 457-6887 for help. Beaconsfield residents are encouraged to check out their city website at www.beaconsfield.ca where infestation information and solutions can be found.

The emerald ash borer seminar will take place Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at Beaconsfield High School, 250 Beaurepaire in Beaconsfield.
