Millette heads on holiday until after election

Prostitutes, thugs, threats, unpaid taxes, dodgy election financing, questionable residency, welfare benefits to an avid Porsche-driver and the alleged subterfuge of the former mayor have all dogged most of Laval’s nine aspirants to the mayor’s office.

You couldn’t make this stuff up. If it were fiction, no one would suspend their disbelief at the oddball twists that Laval’s municipal election campaign has already witnessed.

Now, with ten days left to go in the city’s election race, fringe mayoral candidate Régent Millette has announced that he plans to pull a page from the New Democratic Party’s campaign book during the last federal election: He’s leaving on vacation.

“I will be doing the same thing as some NDP candidates did—candidates who won while on vacation down south,” wrote Millette in announcing his departure, Oct. 20.

The fringe candidate has tried unsuccessfully to get elected in more than two dozen federal, provincial and municipal campaigns.

On a Mission from God

Most of his bids have been as an independent, though in the 2003 provincial election he ran for the socially conservative Christian Democracy Party (CDP) of Quebec, which opposes same-sex marriage and abortion.

During his absence on holiday, Millette has designated another former fringe mayoral candidate, Rick Blatter, who decided to sit out the current election campaign, as “his left-hand man and spokesperson.”

Like the Blues Brothers, he added, “Régent Millette’s right-hand man is God.”

Millette has stated that he if he is elected, he will donate his salary to his family’s “foundation”, though there is no record of the organization having been recognized as an official charity.

According to Quebec government documents, Millette formerly operated a firm that provided “casting” and “paralegal” services.

Millette, who said that he will return Nov. 9, six days after the Laval election, never replied to any of The Suburban’s interview requests.
