The rainy weather on the weekend of May 25-26 did not stop the Laval Alzheimer’s Society from conducting their annual Memory Walk to help raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease.
The walk, currently in its eighth year, is the organizations biggest fundraising event. It began at Odyssée des jeunes school park at around 10 a.m., May 26. Participants were given the choice to walk either 2.5 km or 5 km.
While they expected to raise $75,000, inclement weather affected the turnout, and instead they only raised $54,000.
“Despite the weather, the people who came really did enjoy themselves,” said Laval Alzheimer’s Society Director Lise Lalande. “People didn’t leave feeling let-down; they left with a big smile on their face!”
Lalande claimed that one of the most successful factors of the two-day event was the Clown Express, which involved 11 circus members who encouraged others to laugh and participate in activities.
The Clown Express really “helped to set the mood,” she said.
This year, a total of 350 people registered for the walk, short of the goal of more than 1,000 registrations. Last year 650 people registered, with nice weather playing a big role.
Despite rainy weather, the Laval Alzheimer’s Society annual Memory Walk attracted 350 people, May 26.
