Premier Fréchette has offered support to Bombardier, in light of President Trump’s threat to stop the sale of its planes in the United States, alleging that the aircraft aren’t “good enough” and that if Canada wants to keep selling the jets there, they’ll have to be built not in Montreal but in the United States.
The Premier said that “…Bombardier is a source of pride for Quebec, a flagship of our economy, a major player in our aerospace industry and Quebec will not allow anyone to dictate where our companies must produce in order to access a market.”
The measures were adopted at last night’s special cabinet meeting, but Opposition leaders who met the Premier afterward said that she offered no clear answers to some of their biggest questions about Ottawa’s response and what it could mean for Quebec.
Quebec is moving to shut foreign companies out of public contracts and direct more government spending toward Quebec and Canadian businesses, as the trade war with the United States escalates.
