The Quebec trucking industry is praising the provincial government’s move to make roads safer by tightening regulations affecting how Ontario truckers can operate in Quebec, which now see Ontario truckers with two years or less experience have to pass a driving exam at the SAAQ, to transfer their heavy vehicle licence from Ontario to Quebec. Ontario’s auditor general has identified shortcomings in the province’s training and oversight of the trucking industry. SAAQ spokesman Simon-Pierre Poulin said that it’s easier to get a driver’s permit in Ontario and transfer it, than to qualify for a permit here. 350+ drivers transfer their trucking permits every year from Ontario to Quebec.
