Researcher Annie Barreck has published her doctoral thesis on work-life balance in the Journal of Transport & Health. She has determined commuting between home and work can interfere with the balance, to the point it can cause psychological distress for workers, particularly if they use public transportation. Cars best protect mental health, well ahead of cycling or walking. She says that the time one spends commuting is a main determining factor; and that the more time that workers spend commuting, the more that they report work-family conflicts and the greater that their mental health is affected and that they display more symptoms of psychological distress: anxiety, loss of interest, frustration, headaches.
