Eating disorders that occur early in a child’s life have been linked to major structural changes in their brains according to a study led by Clara Moreau, a researcher at the Azrieli Research Centre at Sainte Justine Hospital in Montreal.
She and her team have analysed MRI brain images of 290 children ages 7 to 13 and have observed that in anorexic children, there is a significant thinning of the cerebral cortex.
They say that while this will have an impact on the lives of young people suffering from anorexia, it can be reversed, provided there are not too many relapses.
Such children also have to work twice as long as another to learn the same thing, because the brain is slowed.
