Residents of Pointe Claire will be voting for a new mayor after longtime incumbent Bill McMurchie announced his retirement from politics following the end of this mandate.
Voters will have a choice between two longtime residents: Morris Trudeau, a retired police officer who has served as District 8 Councillor for 15 years and was a member of the city’s demerger committee, serving alongside McMurchie and recently acclaimed District 4 Councillor Aldo Iermieri or political newcomer John Belvedere, a retired businessman who has been president of the Pointe Claire Village Pool and was part of the city’s centennial committee.
Trudeau told The Suburban that his almost 50-year relationship with the Pointe Claire is an advantage for him since “knowledge of the city is important and I know the community pretty well inside-out.”
His extensive municipal experience is a facet of his campaign that he holds key as “I can work well with any council and city employees. It’s very important to know how the city is run and how to treat your employees.”
First time candidate Belvedere said that he believes bringing a “a clean slate” to local politics will help “citizens get the answers they want.”
“I will be running on transparency, communication and accountability,” Belvedere said.
Both candidates believe in the necessary revitalization of Pointe Claire Village and Belvedere would like to see “new businesses being attracted to our industrial park to keep our tax base low.”
