Jealousy turns violent, kneecapping, school break-in foiled

“The fire at the Chomedey Inn was apparently accidental,” Laval Police Const. Franco di Genova said in an interview.
Last week, The Suburban reported that a blaze broke out at the iconic lodge in an unoccupied room at the northeast corner of the hotel during the afternoon of Nov. 21.
Firefighters limited the fire to the room where it broke out, and no one was injured.
Moomba assault
Police were called to the popular Moomba dinner and dance club at 2:20 a.m., Nov. 17.
“At one point, a 25-year-old man who was dancing with a young woman was hit on the left side of his neck,” reported Const. di Genova. “The assailant had a glass in his hand, which broke with the force of the impact.”
“The victim suffered a 10 cm laceration on his neck, lost quite a bit of blood and was taken to the Sacré Coeur hospital for treatment,” he continued. “The suspect, also 25, left the premises right away, but a police sergeant who was on patrol nearby spotted him soon afterward wearing a white shirt that was covered in blood. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated armed assault.”
A half-hour after police were called to Moomba, they also received a 911 call to Le Focus bar at 1989 Highway 440 West.
“Several police cars were dispatched and the first constables to arrive found a 25-year-old man at the front door, who had been shot once in the knee, shattering his kneecap completely,” said Const. di Genova.
Laval Police detectives are reviewing video from a number of surveillance cameras to learn more about the assault.
Arrest ends break-in streak
On Nov. 28, an alert citizen notified police after seeing two 17-year-olds attempting to break in to Souvenir Elementary School.
“Patrol officers caught, handcuffed and arrested one of them, who didn’t see them arrive, atop the school awning, peering inside,” said Const. di Genova. “His partner and two other officers came upon the other nearby, who fled on foot. He didn’t get far, and was arrested in the back yard of a nearby house.”
“During interrogation, they both admitted to five break-ins at hockey arenas in Ste. Dorothée, Chomedey and Sainte Rose districts,” he said. “In all, they admitted to about a dozen break-ins at schools or arenas, where they were looking for loose cash lying around—not goods.”
