Sainte Rose voters gave a solid vote of confidence to the Liberals’ Laval newcomer, electing financial whiz Jean Habel as their representative in the National Assembly.
The 26-year-old sprinted to an early lead and never looked back, going on to defeat a strong, experienced Parti québécois MNA, Suzanne Proulx.
Habel, a professional accountant and stock market analyst with SNC-Lavalin, breezed to victory with 42.33 per cent of the riding’s vote, when The Suburban went to press.
Proulx, in contrast, earned the confidence of just 27.9 per cent of Sainte Rose voters, barely edging out Coalition pour l’avenir du Québec candidate Domenico Cavaliere, who received 23.59 per cent of the ballot.
Québec solidaire candidate André da Silva Pereira had 5.46 per cent at press time, and Green Party candidate Bruno Forget 0.7 per cent.
The youth candidate’s election contrasted with the fate of the Parti québécois’ Léo Bureau-Blouin, 22, whom Laval des Rapides voters turfed out in favour of Habel’s fellow Liberal candidate Saul Polo.
Though a newcomer to elected office, Habel has been actively engaged in helping Laval’s poor, supporting local meals-on-wheels, food bank and goodwill store charities.
