Amateur West Island historians take note as the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro, in association with Roxboro’s centennial; will be hosting a Jane’s Walk taking place this Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

Jane’s Walk began eight years ago following the death of Jane Jacobs, who worked tirelessly to improve the urban landscape she lived in, whether it was New York City or eventually Toronto where she called home. The walks take place all over the country and are created to encourage people to get to know their area and neighbours a little better.

Longtime resident Ed Hoyer, who is also a member of the centennial committee, and historian Guy Billard will be hosting the walk, pointing out interesting facts and historical notes from some of the borough’s prominent structures, such as the post office built in 1960 or the train station that began in 1914.

“The Roxboro train station helped build the West Island because it enabled people to come out here and live in this beautiful area,” Hoyer told The Suburban.

Hoyer, who lives in his childhood home, returned to Roxboro in 1991 after moving away to work. When he and his family originally came in 1960, “we had moved away from Holland and came to the land of milk and honey,” said Hoyer. “The West Island was very rustic then as there were a lot of fields and the Trans Canada Highway (Highway 40) was only built in the early 1960s.”

The Jane’s Walk for the Roxboro Centennial is taking place Saturday, May 3 starting at 2 p.m. at the Centre Commercial in Roxboro. For further details, go online at www.ecologieurbaine.net.
