Last month, Laval’s municipal housing department l’Office municipal d’habitation de Laval (OMHL) began accepting applications from seniors who want to live in a new eight-storey Gold-LEED certified building that will be ready for occupation in November.
Now known as Habitation Louise Beauchamp, the building will include 86 apartments for seniors above the head office of the OMHL and a cafeteria.
So far 65 people have submitted applications.
“The building is not yet finished, but we want to inform people rapidly,” said OMHL spokesperson André Dénommé. “We sent letters to everyone eligible who lives in our buildings in the first week of April. We also put posters up and we put together a website, both in French and English. We are very proud of our project and so we work hard to promote it.”
Denommé says that he knows applicants won’t sign leases until they see a completed unit, but he’s confident that the website contains all the other pertinent information.
To be accepted, residents must be 75 years of age or older, unless they have mobility issues, in which case they can be between the ages of 65 and 74. Live-in caregivers must be 65 years of age or older. Single-occupancy units cost $1,238 per month; double occupancy apartments cost $1,644.
Those rates include lunch every day, free washers and driers and full-time video surveillance. Parking costs another five or $35 per month for exterior or interior spots respectively.
Half of the apartment units are available for people who qualify for government subsidies. All applicants, whether subsidized or not, must have a net worth of less than $120,000, have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, and have lived in greater Montreal for at least one year.
“We started this project three years ago, said Denommé. “It’s exciting to have it become a reality.”
