Traffic congestion dominates discussion

The Pointe Claire municipal chamber welcomed close to 50 residents, included Mayor Morris Trudeau, and representatives of town council, in its inaugural open discussion from Police Station 5 (PDQ 5).
PDQ 5 Chief Mohamed Bouhdid, alongside his team, hosted the information seminar introducing a new citizen approach-taking the time to listen to population.
PDQ 5, with a staff of 83, services Pointe Claire, Dorval, Dorval Island, a population of 50,000 serves an area of 39.55 sq. km., which includes the airport, 20 elementary and high schools, two major industrial parks, as well as many businesses, restaurants, and bars.
Sixty-seven per cent of the population has lived in the same address the past five years, 49 per cent are English speaking and 20 percent are aged 65 and over. The department receives 130,000 annual 911 calls.
Traffic congestion, speeding, and passage violations dominated the discussion during Question Period. Half dozen home owners from Alston Road collected 27 signatures from their neighbours to emphasis the seriousness of the situation. Similar stories echoed from residents living on Windmill, Chester, Sedgefield, Coolbreeze and Donegani.
Several citizens suggested the use of photo radar in these areas of concern. Photo radar is prohibited as it is at the provincial level.
Francois Lachapelle, traffic safety officer of PDQ 5, assured the audience that inquiries are received and dealt with in accordance of viability.
Nathalie Chapman, executive director, West Island Association of Intellectual Handicapped (WIAIH) is worried about the bullying amongst people with disabilities and offered in working on programs with PDQ 5 on addressing this segment of the population.
Liliana Belluci and Hélène Jubinville, community relations officers, advised that door-to-door solicitation is strictly prohibited unless a permit is issued. This infraction should be reported to headquarters.
The PDQ 5 officers also offer talks to the senior citizen population. Their guidelines deal with the abuse, neglect and mistreatment of seniors and include prevention activities.
Mayor Trudeau was pleased with this forum, as it was the first of its kind in Pointe Claire, adjourning the meeting shortly after 9 p.m.
