Canada approves drug for obese people with sleep apnea

Anatomic factors predispose obese people to obstructive sleep apnea

By Murray Sherriffs

Health Canada has approved weight-loss drug Zepbound for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in obese adults.

The department says Zepbound is the only GLP-1 drug in Canada approved for the sleep disorder.

Apnea causes people to stop breathing temporarily because their upper airway is blocked, because they are too large.

Throat muscles relax or there is too much fat in the upper airway, thus causing sleep interruption.
