In an effort to promote safe boating on the Quebec waterways, the Lac St. Louis Squadron, in conjunction with Canadian Power and Sail (CPS), is offering courses to would be captains this month.

For boaters who wish to hit the water with a VHF radio for safety must be certified to use the radio properly and Lac St. Louis Squadron have a class for that as well as courses in boating basics and essentials and weather fundamentals.

“We teach new boaters about the buoy systems and to know the difference between red and green lights on the water,” said Margaret Bretin Jones of the Lac St. Louis Squadron.

Another course offered this fall, marine maintenance, will help boaters “tell the difference between a job that they can do themselves or if they need to get help for,” Bretin Jones said.

All ages are welcome to take part and course costs differ depending on materials needed but the instructors teach for free. Another advantage of the courses, besides learning the ropes from seasoned boaters, “is that boaters can get together and learn from each other as well as the expertise of the teachers,” Bretin Jones told The Suburban.
“When you are on the water, it is different than driving on the highway as you have a 360 degree view so you have to see everything, including how to negotiate around sandbars,” said Bretin Jones.

Registration is taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club in Dorval, 1,350 Lakeshore. For more information, go online at lslps.cps-ecp.org or call [514] 900-9761.
