It was a busy day at the 40th edition of the Laval Blood Drive on Friday, as the annual event successfully beat its target of 850 donations. The event also welcomed a number of special guests, who joined members of the public in giving blood.

In the morning, there was a visit from the Mayor Martine Beaugrand, who took a tour of the installation and met with donors, volunteers and Hema Quebec employees.

The spokespeople for the event included Guy Dassault, director of the Quebec Fire Service, along with his nine-year-old grandson, Gabriel, who has already needed over 20 blood transfusions in his life.

As Mr. Dassault explained “In 2008, we learnt that Gabriel had leukemia. Following two years of chemotherapy and numerous blood transfusions, he went into remission, but in June 2011 we found out he had been taken ill again.”
Gabriel was all smiles and a picture of health on Friday as he accompanied his grandfather along with his younger brother and their “bodyguard” Jeremy.

This event was the held from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Centre Sportif and by lunchtime they had already welcomed more than 500 residents to give blood, which was a 25 per cent improvement on the previous year.

According to Hema Quebec, in this province alone there is a need for 1,000 blood donations each day.
The event held in Laval is the largest and most important mobile blood drive in all of Canada. Other special guests included, Stéphane Richard, from Rythme FM, Luc Langevin, the magician, Joanne Kennedy from Sanofi and, of course Globule, the Hema Quebec’s mascot.
