A debate between the candidates for mayor of Verdun will be held today, Wednesday, October 23, at 5:30 p.m., in the Verdunoise room at the Marcel Giroux Centre, 4501 Bannantyne.

This is the only scheduled debate on the mainland. A debate on Nun’s Island already took place.

This debate is being jointly organized by five local community groups to find out how the candidates plan to combat poverty and emphasize the role of community organizations, women’s issues, immigration and democracy should they take office.

The project is a joint effort by the Centre des femmes de Verdun, the Table de concertation en relations interculturelles de Verdun, the Comité d’action des citoyennes et citoyens de Verdun, Project PAL and the immigrant family aid centre known as Casa C.A.F.I.

All eight teams in the borough have been doing door-to-door campaigning daily. With more than five votes per person, all of them have been spending their first few minutes explaining how the ballet will function.

The Concertation en développement social de Verdun has even created a 21-page booklet explaining municipal governance to citizens. It includes how to vote during the current municipal election, but also explains how responsibilities are divided between the mayor of Montreal, the executive committee, the municipal council, the agglomeration council and the boroughs. Check out the guide.
