Students at Lindsay Place High School gave back to others this past Thanksgiving holiday by serving meals at the Old Brewery Mission adding to their yearly event of serving meals at Christmas.
Eleven Christmases ago, students began serving traditional meals with turkey and all the fixings for the city’s homeless whereas before Christmas dinner was hamburgers. Students, through fund raising initiatives, have raised more than $100,000 for the Old Brewery Mission since 2000, when students raised money to buy turkeys. The program has also collected warm clothes, gloves and hats for the mission’s residents while still providing enough food for 1,000 meals.
“Over the years, graduates from the school have often returned to serve at the mission as well as help raise funds,” explained teacher and program founder John Kesson. “Graduates also now go and serve meals at the mission on their own time, keeping their involvement to a very personal level.”
In order to provide enough food for the school’s 12th annual Christmas dinner, students from LPHS will be bagging groceries at Maxi Dorval, December 13-15.
