The students in the John Rennie High School Actors’ Studio program will be presenting J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan at the Louise Chalmers Theatre from Dec. 12-14.
The Actors’ Studio program has two classes of 32 students and each group gets to present a major work that entails classroom projects as well as a two month intensive rehearsal period. For Peter Pan, many of the roles are being performed by students in Secondary 3.
“Peter Pan brings us back to a time when we were free of responsibilities and only thought of playing and making believe,” explained James Colley, director of the show and program director. “It allows us to free ourselves from the everyday drudgery of our lives and live in that unforgettable place known as Neverland.”
Due to insurance and cost concerns, the boy who never grew up and his cohorts will not actually be flying through the air as Colley has created some stylized movement sequences to create the illusion of flying and of being underwater. The choice works according to Colley because of the nature of the play’s “idea of make believe. The way kids play today is a lot different when I was younger as my favourite toy was my bike.
Nowadays, the idea of play is associated with an electronic device.”
While the program has focused on classic works in the past like Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Cinderella, Colley’s next work will be Front, a more modern play that focuses on the women left behind after their husbands, sons and fathers have gone off to serve in WWII.
Peter Pan will be presented on Thursday, Dec. 12 and Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. as well as a matinee on Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $6 for seniors and students and $12 for adults. To reserve tickets, log onto www.jrhsactorsstudio.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
