The Quebec Liberal Party easily held onto its seat in the Marquette riding, giving François Ouimet another mandate since he took over as its MNA 20 years ago.

As of press time, Ouimet had secured 63% of all voters in the riding for a total of 19,279 votes, up signifanctly from his last two elections where in 2008, Ouimet captured 13,471 votes or 56% of all voters’ intentions and 49% of the vote 18 months ago.

Ouimet’s closest rival was the PQ’s Elisabeth Fortin who earned 14% of all votes, a total of 4,504 votes. Third place in Marquette went to Marc Theriault of the CAQ with 1,760 votes.

Constituents responded to Ouimet’s frequent urging throughout the 33-day campaign to “vote in great numbers to get rid of any kind of referendum threat.”

Now that the Liberals have earned a solid majority, Ouimet wants to focus on “stimulating the economy to take care of our schools, hospitals and social services and by giving oxygen to schools by investing directly into them, we can offer better services to students.”

Eighteen per cent of all eligible voters in the riding took part in the advanced polling held last week.
