On Friday April 11, the Laval Police emergency measures coordination centre implemented a plan to handle the increased flood threat across Laval.

All 311 and 911 calls are routed to this central location where water levels are closely  monitored. Currently, the location is open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., however, should the situation change the center will remain open 24 hours a day.

“The center allows us to manage information in real time. It channels information from citizens through to public works, engineering and the fire department, which are all coordinated at the same location,” said Laval police spokesperson Const. Natalie Lorrain.
Police are asking every citizen to take responsibility for their own property. They said that it is important for residents to report changes in the water levels, move all electronics and valuables to higher levels in their homes and verify their sump pumps.

According to Const. Lorrain, for most residents along the rivers it remains business as usual, but there is concern that the unseasonably warm weather and rain that is expected might have a greater impact than in previous years.

“In addition, normally at this time of year the ice has melted from the rivers but this year it has not. We are concerned that it will melt quickly due to the heat,” Const. Lorrain said in an interview with The Suburban. “If the ice breaks up all at once, we must be prepared.”
Sandbags are available at fire stations throughout Laval. Locations and more information can be found on the city’s web site.
