La Cigale will perform at the Church of the Epiphany, 4322 Wellington, on Thursday, May 29, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20.
\u201cThe May 29 concert is called La Cigale en Concerto<\/i> and features our expanded ensemble, the La Cigale baroque orchestra,\u201d said the group\u2019s artistic director, Madeleine Owen. \u201cWe\u2019ll be a dozen musicians playing baroque instruments: recorder, violins, viola da gamba, archlute and theorbo, baroque harp, harpsichord, baroque oboe and bassoon as well as the mandolin.\u201d<\/p>\n

La Cigale includes four main players, although several other musicians join them for special concerts like the one taking place in Verdun this week. All of the participants play Renaissance and Baroque period instruments to period and modern arrangements. The group has been around since 2006, but is better known on the Plateau than elsewhere in Montreal.<\/p>\n

This year, they made a special effort to move around the city to attract new audiences. The group\u2019s harp player, Sara Lackie, lives in Verdun, so she found the Church of the Epiphany concert venue. Two previous concerts in the venue got great audiences, says Owen. According to her, Verdun audiences have been very welcoming and the venue has a great sound.<\/p>\n

The performance this week will be larger and even more lively than their previous concerts.
\u201cThe programme is up-beat and energetic,\u201d said Owen. \u201cIt features some well-known baroque favorites: a double concerto by Vivaldi and Corelli\u2019s Folia (but in our own, special arrangements) as well as less-known pieces: an oboe sonata by Josep Pla and a mandolin concerto by Luigi Lamberti.\u201d<\/p>\n
