Chomedey MNA Guy Ouellette noticed that the word on how to detect breast cancer early, while it\u2019s still treatable, wasn\u2019t getting through to many non-francophone Laval women. <\/p>\n

\u201cConcertation-Femme de Montr\u00e9al<\/i> holds a breast cancer awareness-raising event in Montreal every year,\u201d Ouellette\u2019s political attach\u00e9 R\u00e9mi Alwan told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cMr. Ouellette decided to join together with the other MNAs to help provide the finances needed to bring this event to Laval this year.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMany women don\u2019t know how to get checked for breast cancer,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe message was not reaching cultural communities. When they receive a letter from the local health authority reminding them to go for a mammogram, they often don\u2019t know what it is about and throw it in the garbage.\u201d <\/p>\n

So the MNA\u2019s helped to organize an event, together with the Carrefour d\u2019intercultures de Laval, <\/i>from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., May 12, at the St. Joseph Community Centre. <\/p>\n

The seminar included health tips that promote prevention. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about more than simply getting tested,\u201d Alwan explained. \u201cA healthy lifestyle will also help to prevent you from developing cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also set up a table where women could go and string their own bracelet that will help to remind them to go and get a mammogram,\u201d Alwan added. <\/p>\n

In addition to Ouellette, MNAs Gilles Ouimet (Fabre), Jean Rousselle (Vimont), and Jean Habel (Ste. Rose) attended the event, together with representatives on behalf of Saul Polo (Laval des Rapides) and Family Minister Francine Charbonneau (Mille \u00celes), who doubles as Quebec\u2019s Minister for Laval. <\/p>\n
