Of the total budget of $6.2 million to be spent on the 50th anniversary celebrations next year by the celebrations corporation, the city of Laval will contribute $4.2 million. The rest of the money will come from sponsorships and donations. <\/p>\n

According to Laval city councillor Vasilios Karidogiannis the celebrations will be have many multicultural events. <\/p>\n

\u201cI am very happy to say that the celebrations will have a variety of ethnic themed events\u201d Karidongiannis explained in an interview with The Suburban,<\/i> \u201cthis initiative will properly represent Laval\u2019s diverse cultures.\u201d <\/p>\n

The corporation celebration will be chaired by Laval\u2019s Mayor Demers. Well known comedian Philippe Bond will be the official spokesperson for the festivities that will revolve around the theme of Laval\u2019s history. <\/p>\n

A fundraising campaign to raise $2 million will round out the budget. The presidency of the campaign has been granted to business men Alain Bouchard of Couche Tard and Geoff Molson, president of the Montreal Canadians hockey club. <\/p>\n

The year 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the city of Laval, which merged 14 municipalities on August 6, 1965. The theme of the year long celebration is one that celebrates the history of Laval and the collective culture and history of all 14 merged municipalities. The history of the island dates back much further to the discovery of New France and the right to \u00cele J\u00e9sus in 1636. With approximately 410,000 citizens, it is also the third largest city in Quebec. <\/p>\n

Among the elaborate list of celebrations held throughout the year by either the city or its partners, there will \u201ccitizen\u201d events. These events will be initiated by the citizens through a call out from the organizations to the public. An allocation of $1 million will be set aside to fund such initiatives. <\/p>\n

Interested parties need to submit a event idea by August 15. The selected projects will be announced in late September. <\/p>\n
