Having celebrated 150 years of offering rowing to Lachine and area residents, the Lachine Rowing Club, the oldest club of its kind in the country, noted that the club’s historical archives were scattered. <\/p>\n

Concerned that the club’s rich legacy could eventually be forgotten, club vice-president Richard Cabana set out to document the club’s past by speaking to older members as well as scouring the various photos, mementos and documents the club has acquired over the years. <\/p>\n

What resulted from Cabana’s exercise is a book detailing the club’s expansive past as well as detailing rowing’s growth over the years. the book begins with the club’s inception in 1863 and goes right through to modern times. <\/p>\n

At a recent book launch in May at Lachine’s Trois Devins, Cabana presented a copy of the new book to Mayor Claude Dauphin entitled Aviron Lachine Rowing 1863-2013: A History.<\/p>\n

The book describes the larger events that took place from the inception of the club in 1863 right up until today and also highlights the events that influenced rowing in Canada and the role that the Lachine Club played. <\/p>\n

Richard Cabana, along with Charles Hauss the club’s President, offered the very first printed copy of the book to Mr. Claude Dauphin, Lachine’s mayor, accompanied by Lachine City councillor Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Cloutier. <\/p>\n

\nThe book is being sold by the Lachine Rowing Club for any interested readers.<\/div>\n
