\u201cThe 75 trees being planted in Fresh Meadows will hopefully encourage citizens to plant more trees on their own properties,\u201d said Andrew Duffield, director of Pubic Works for the city of Beaconsfield. This past Monday afternoon, Duffield, along with Mayor Georges Bourelle, TD bank vice-president Elena Rizzuto and Jean-Jacques Lincourt of Trees Canada took part in a press conference at the green space adjacent to Angell Woods that once served as the ninth fairway for the old golf course.<\/p>\n

TD gave the grant money to the city, one of 25 municipalities to take part in the province, and Bourelle told the assembled, that was made up of many of the volunteers who helped plant and fertilize the new trees, that the city would be matching the bank\u2019s donation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Beaconsfield becomes even more green with this project, it shows how this project goes hand in hand with the city\u2019s environmental protection of green spaces, which is a priority in the city,\u201d said Bourelle. \u201cUrban forests are often neglected and their protection is of upmost importance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rizzuto was proud of Beaconsfield for taking part in the grant initiative and hopes that \u201cwe can inspire even more municipalities to take invest in the urban canopy project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lincourt also praised the city for becoming even more green.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlanting trees improves the air quality we breathe and with 30% to 40% tree cover in Beaconsfield, statistics have shown that life expectancy is higher and cardiac problems are lower\u201d in areas with a lot of canopy cover, plants and trees.<\/p>\n

Duffield also mentioned that the trees selected in Fresh Meadows for planting have information pertaining to water needs and ideal planting locations. Said data, including photographs, will be coming to the city\u2019s website shortly for easier perusal.
