While English schools throughout the province suffer sagging enrolment, Laval\u2019s face the opposite challenge: They\u2019re bursting at the seams. <\/p>\n

The problem has for years been acute in Fabreville, where Twin Oaks School teaches 493 students\u201424 per cent more than the 399 youth whom it was designed to house. <\/p>\n

\u201cSome kids who had spent their whole school career there had to go back to the school that they were zoned for,\u201d lamented Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board (SWLSB) chair Jennifer Maccarone. \u201cIt was heartwrenching.\u201d <\/p>\n

The remaining students had to make do with makeshift classrooms in temporary trailers outside. However, on March 13, contractor Candev got the go-ahead from SWLSB to begin the long-overdue $8 million project to expand the building to meet the burgeoning demand. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the only English school in Quebec to get the green light to expand,\u201d Maccarone enthused. \u201cWe\u2019ll be adding 2,900 sq.ft. to the facility: 10 classrooms plus five kindergarten classes and a gymnasium, as well as four daycare rooms and a new library and music room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
Heavy construction ought to be complete by August and the interior is slated to be finished by November. <\/p>\n

\u201cSWLSB is very fortunate to have an adept building resources director, J\u00e9r\u00f4me Dionne, because the school board would have to pay, if it incurs any cost overrun,\u201d Maccarone said. <\/p>\n

Children celebrated their impending freedom from the temporary trailers during a school assembly. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey were very excited,\u201d Maccarone said. \u201cThere will also be a formal launch in December this year.\u201d <\/p>\n

Other overcrowded Laval elementary schools include Terry Fox, Hillcrest Academy and Souvenir. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re feeder schools for our high schools,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re bursting at the seams.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s also true in St. Eustache,\u201d she added, \u201cwhere we\u2019re also seeing population growth, with a corresponding increase in enrolment.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately it\u2019s not a question of numbers,\u201d Maccarone concluded. \u201cIt\u2019s about meeting the demands of our community and giving its children the best education possible.\u201d
